Rowan Atkinson will return to the West End in February next year with a show combining characters from his television career and newly written material, The Guardian reported. Rowan Live is planned as a run of 30 performances.

The production will include Mr Bean and Blackadder, alongside other comic characters and familiar sketches. Howard Goodall, Richard Curtis and Ben Elton have worked on new material, bringing established collaborators into the project.

The combination gives the show two points of reference: comedy audiences may already recognise and writing being presented as new. It is therefore more than a straightforward restaging of a single television programme.

Moving familiar characters into a live setting changes the conditions of performance. Theatre places performers and spectators in the same space, with timing and audience response unfolding together rather than being shaped entirely through recording and editing.

Atkinson’s best-known characters also draw on different comic approaches. Mr Bean is strongly associated with physical performance, while Blackadder is associated with verbal wit. Their inclusion gives the announced programme scope to draw on more than one aspect of his work.

The limited run establishes the scale of the planned engagement without indicating any further performances beyond it. The principal announcement is a return to the stage that combines recognisable television comedy with new contributions from long-standing creative partners. For audiences, Rowan Live will offer those characters within a shared theatrical programme rather than in their separate screen settings.
