New Zealand violinist Geneva Lewis has chosen music by Barber, Zorn and Glass for her debut recording with the Delos label, according to The Guardian. She is joined by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, conducted by fellow New Zealander Gemma New.

The programme brings together three American composers within a single release. That national connection gives the selection a clear organising idea without implying that the music represents one uniform approach to composition.

Samuel Barber, John Zorn and Philip Glass occupy different places within American musical life. Setting their work alongside one another invites listeners to consider a range of musical languages through the same solo instrument and the same performing partnership.

Lewis is a former BBC New Generation Artist, the Guardian report notes. Her Delos debut concerns her first recording for that label, a distinction that should not be confused with a claim that she has never recorded before.

An orchestral recording also represents a collaboration beyond the featured soloist. The conductor and ensemble shape how the individual instrumental line sits within the larger musical texture, making their participation central to the character of the release.

The album’s clearest defining feature is its all-American programme performed by an internationally connected group of musicians. A New Zealand soloist and conductor work with a Scottish orchestra on repertoire drawn from the United States. The combination places the focus on how a shared programme can bring different musical backgrounds together within one recording.
